Until the Coast is Clear: How polluted is the UK south coast?

December 14, 2018 by Jessica Reid Leave a Comment

Until The Coast is Clear is a journey across the south coast of England, speaking to people from Portsmouth to Penzance about how plastic pollution impacts their home. On my travels I meet beach cleaning volunteers to marine life rescuers and finding out why the issue is close to their hearts and how they are striving to make change.

Why the south coast? This area of of England has been seeing high volumes of litter. Surfers Against Sewage picked up over 43,114kg of litter so far in 2018 from their volunteer beach clean ups with the majority being plastic. There has also been research by The Great British Nurdle Hunt to say over 53 billion nurdles escape into U.K. environment every year, and the biggest amount of nurdles found were in Cornwall (over 131,000 of them found on 100m stretch of beach).
