UK’s first mobile shower for the homeless unveiled in Bournemouth

January 8, 2019 by Sub Editor Leave a Comment

The UK’s first mobile shower unit has been revealed in Bournemouth.

‘The Shower Machine’ visits Richmond Hill Andrew’s URC Church in St Stephen’s Road once a week accompanying ‘Hope For Food’s mobile laundry service.

Hope For Food founder Claire Matthews initiated the mobile shower after a guy said to her. ‘I’ve got clean clothes but I’m still dirty, what do I do now?’ This started the concept of the homeless washing their clothes while they washed themselves.

The gas run showers have enough energy for eight three-minute showers to be taken. It also contains a microwave and a kettle.

Buzz reporter, Alona Hood spoke to one of the volunteers at the mobile shower, Samantha Langdown, who said, “We help them get their dignity back and it made them feel like a human being. We would like to help them restore their faith in humanity.”

Hope For Food bought the shower unit after £35,000 was donated by John B Windsor-Pleydell who sadly passed away before the launch.
