Veganuary – the latest in new year resolutions

January 8, 2019 by subeditor2 Leave a Comment

Veganuary is the next new year resolution that more people are getting into.

Going vegan for the month of January is the perfect opportunity to establish if going vegan is practical and if the health benefits that many claim to have, are true.

Whilst going Vegan has been an increasingly popular lifestyle that has been stereotypically looked down on by traditional meat eaters, more people are considering the benefits of going vegan.

Ewelina Obrebska, manager from the Mad Cucumber cafe says that people are “more conscious about what they’re eating and are willing to try healthier options.”

Documentaries like Cowspiracy, reveals the hardships and mistreatment of animals in the industry and have guided viewers to avoid eating meat and animal products.

While Ewelina has not seen an increase in customers who are vegan she welcomes more regulars through the door than she had previously.  She said: “People are open to trying new things but we have something for everyone to enjoy, we offer different dishes each week to keep things interesting.”

Buzz news reporter, Akshay Kulkarni, who has grown up vegetarian, decided to try vegan carrot cake from the Mad Cucumber and found it surprisingly flavourful.

Unlike regular carrot cake made with dairy products, the ingredients used to make the silky icing and crumbly sponge are completely animal free: He said: “I couldn’t figure out what they had used to make the icing but the bits of carrot gave the cake a very nice authentic carrot flavour.”
