Cook up a storm with Zero Waste Cooking Workshops

January 18, 2019 by subeditor1 Leave a Comment

Want to learn how to cook excellently but most of all efficently? – Good news!

Poole council has teamed up again with Alex De Freitas, chef at Honest Meals restaurant to deliver hands on cooking workshops, aimed at helping you save money, get healthier and reduce food waste.

“A lot of the workshops focus on vegan recipes and eating healthier which is a benefit to the environment, a benefit to the council and a benefit to the people,” said Alex.

Research has shown that the biggest source of waste in the UK is food waste, therefore remaining a considerable problem that needs to be tackled.

Speaking about this Alex revealed “it costs the council four times more to get rid of food waste than it does general waste or recycling so this is an attempt to help councils reduce costs but the most important issue of all is to look at healthier eating habits.”

How will the workshops contribute to helping the environment?

Alex explains, “if we’re using less processed food, we’re reducing packaging – thats the number one. Secondly, we will be helping the environment by teaching people to cook vegan and vegetarian foods.”

What are the general benefits of no waste cooking?

The number one benefit of zero waste cooking according to Alex is saving money for the consumer. As she rightly pointed out, “anything that you are throwing in the bin, unless you stole it, you paid for it. So if you’re putting it in the bin, you’re putting your money in the bin.”

The second benefit she talks about is reducing waste to help the environment and the future of the consumer.

The workshops are free and organisers are requesting 45 Poole households to take part.

Applications will be open from 7 to 27 January 2019. Successful participants will be contacted on 1 February 2019.
