“Without volunteers this place would fall apart”: Winton Salvation Army calls for students to take up volunteering

June 20, 2019 by Joshua Taylor Leave a Comment

Winton Salvation Army, Bournemouth, is appealing for more volunteers and believes students can bring a “different kind of enthusiasm” claims Assistant Director.

The Winton branch of the charity currently runs a church, community centre and two charity shops with the help of approximately 100 volunteers.

Assistant Director, Rebekah Kerslake told Bournemouth Buzz: “A lot of them are in the charity shop so they do things like sorting through clothes, to working on the till, to helping tidy the shop. We wouldn’t be able to run without them.”

We had one girl who used to volunteer in the shop, this was years ago, she used to do a little retro corner. She would spot clothes that she thought were interesting for students”

Student power:

According to The Complete University Guide, there are currently 19,000 students in Bournemouth.

Rebekah believes students can bring “fresh ideas” and added: “I would love it if we had more student volunteers here, we have had in the past.

Volunteers help run the restaurant, bathing facilities and several support groups that aid the more vulnerable members of the local community.

“I think on the whole people want to volunteer because they want to do something that they feel is worthwhile. Certainly, volunteering somewhere like here, where you’re seeing so many people from all walks of life coming in, you really do feel that you really are helping people.”
