Vox Pop: The public’s opinion on Afro-Caribbean options on the high-street

December 15, 2017 by Sephora Landu Leave a Comment

The public in Bournemouth Square was asked about their thoughts on the number of Afro-Caribbean salons in Bournemouth,  drugstore makeup, and supermarkets selling Afro-Caribbean food.

Vella N’dilaye, 24, moved from Belgium three months ago said:

Vella N'diaye

“I think there should be more hair shops in Bournemouth because I haven’t seen one, I just go to London. We need salons to be able to do all kinds of hair. It’s hard to find a good hairdresser and It’s hard to find food and you have to go to another city, It’s annoying!  It’s annoying that the darker you are, the more money you have to spend.”

Ivey Githaiga, 31, a recent graduate, said:

“I think that there aren’t enough, Afro-Carribean hair shops in Bournemouth and there should be more salons for Afro-Caribbeans. They don’t accommodate us at all! When my boyfriend comes to visit I find it even harder to find him a barber. With makeup I just make do with what I have, there aren’t many options in places like Boots.”

Calida, Ostey, 25 said:

“It is difficult, but I’m quite lucky, I have family that does my hair, otherwise, I wouldn’t know who to go to. It would be so nice if supermarkets started to sell Afro-Caribbean food.”

AJ Brown, 41 a receptionist said:

“I don’t wear makeup so it isn’t really a problem for me. Though there needs to be more variety because drugstore dark is caramel, which doesn’t make sense! They should make more colours there isn’t enough variety for us Afro-Caribbeans.”
