Major road improvements continue at Poole’s Townside

January 7, 2019 by subeditor1 Leave a Comment

By Ben Coley

Residents and commuters have been urged to plan ahead as a result of todays continuation of the £11.7million Poole Townside scheme.

The Townside scheme intends to improve the efficiency of the Hunger Hill junction. The scheme will also provide safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the Council’s bid to revitalise the town centre.

The scheme covers the area between Hunger Hill and Poole Bridge, which also includes West Street and West Quay Road.

The Borough of Poole council have stated that the majority of traffic lanes will remain open between peak hours (7:30am – 9am and 4:30pm-6pm). However only one lane will be open to traffic during off peak hours.

Julian McLaughlin, Head of Growth and Infrastructure, Borough of Poole, said: “The works so far have been designed well and have helped to minimise the disruption to those travelling through the area… but inevitably these works will cause some disruption to road users.”

“Where possible we would encourage drivers to start thinking about the steps they can take to minimise the impact on their journeys.”

The January works will involve realigning curbs and carrying out footpath works from Hunger Hill down to New Orchard. Works will be continued on the Hunger Hill junction ahead of the ‘switchover’ on Sunday 20th January 2019 to the new road layout and one-way system on West Quay Road and West Street.
