Boscombe news agent refused security shutters despite fears of burglary

January 7, 2019 by subeditor1 Leave a Comment

Boscombe News has been denied the permission to install new security shutters even though the owners are fearful for anti-social behaviour and burglary.

Boscombe News , based on Christchurch Road, have appealed the decision made by Bournemouth Borough Council to the Planning Inspectorate.

Planning inspectors have dismissed the case because of their concerns that shutters will impact on the character and image of the area.

Boscombe News were first denied their planning application in January last year and were refused their second application April last year. During that time Boscombe News had their window smashed, which cost £400 to replace.

Wathek Alozdi, who has owned Boscombe News for 16 years, said: “I have applied for shutters and was turned down on the second time. This is ridiculous because the Council keep referring to the surrounding area, but my application was well in keeping with surrounding businesses.”

“I have been told there are other ways of securing [my shop]. I would like someone to come and tell me and show me.”

The report on the appeal decision, published by Inspector Janet Wilson, said: “I recognise that this is an issue of great concern for the appellant however I am not persuaded, on the basis of the evidence, that the appeal solution is the only means by which additional security could be provided at the premises.”
