When David Bowie played in Dorset

January 8, 2019 by Sub Editor Leave a Comment

It’s almost two years since David Bowie passed away and today would’ve been his 72nd birthday.

To commemorate one of the world’s best selling music artists, we’re looking back at the times he performed in Dorset.

Over the course of his first tour (titled the ‘Ziggy Stardust Tour’) he performed in Bournemouth three times.

The first time was on 14 March 1972 when he performed at Chelsea Village on Glenfern Road.

He performed at Chelsea Village again just two months later on 25 May 1972.

His final visit to Bournemouth was exactly a year later as he played to a crowd gathered at the Winter Gardens venue.

Footage of his third and final visit to Bournemouth has been uploaded onto YouTube and is available below.

However, those weren’t his only tour dates in the local area. He also played in Boscombe during the same tour.

Specifically, he played at what was then called the Royal Ballroom on 31 August 1972. It’s the only local venue Bowie played at that still exists, albeit now called the 02 Academy Bournemouth.

In subsequent tours, he performed in a wider variety of countries, primarily in mainland Europe.

Bowie did play at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2004 but never back in Dorset.

Despite that, his legacy continues and the ‘Bowie Experience’ is a celebratory concert which will be visiting Dorset.

They will be visiting the Regent Centre in Christchurch on 4 May and later the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre on the 30 November.
