Dorset Fire and Rescue Service looking for on-call firefighters

January 8, 2019 by Sub Editor Leave a Comment

This week fire crews across the country, including the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service are backing a national campaign to get more people to become on-call firefighters.

The ‘Need More’ awareness week is encouraging people to take up the role of an on-call firefighter and earn extra money for themselves.

No previous experience is necessary and all training is done on the job.

An on-call firefighter can be fighting fires or working at open days and working with their local community.

They can be called out two or three times a week for a few hours at a time. The on-call hours are based around people’s availability and other commitments.

The role is said to be good for helping people develop a range of skills. These include health and safety and medical response training, situational awareness, leadership skills, and the ability to work under pressure.

Group Manager Andy Cole said: “On-call firefighters are an integral part of our service and community.

“We are keen to encourage anyone with the right skills to find out about what they can offer us – and in return, what we can offer you.

“Hundreds of fire stations across the UK are crewed by on call firefighters who respond to emergency calls like these from their work or home.”
