“It’s not behaviour I would encourage” – AFC Bournemouth coach on Marcelo Bielsa’s spy tactics

January 17, 2019 by Sub Editor Leave a Comment

AFC Bournemouth Academy coach Alan Connell has given his view on the ethics surrounding Spygate, after Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa confessed to sending spies to opposition training sessions.

The Bournemouth Under-18s manager accepted that all clubs have their own ways of trying to make the most of marginal gains, but from a sportsmanship standpoint spying on the opposition is not something he would encourage.

Connell was speaking exclusively to Buzz News reporter Stephen Wright a day after his young Cherries side advanced to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup by beating Oxford United 3-0.

“It’s not something I ever heard of happening in my career. The analysis and the depths that teams go to now are advancing all the time. Techniques are getting more and more specific as teams look for that extra one-percent advantage.

“It’s not something we as a club will be doing. I’m pretty sure of that.”

“It’s not behaviour that I would be encouraging or would do myself. It’s up to Leeds and their manager what they want to do. It’s an interesting one and definitely got people talking.

“From an etiquette and sportsmanship side of things, I would say there’s a line you shouldn’t cross. At AFC Bournemouth, there are a lot of people who work very hard to try to find those little one-percent gains but it’s not something that we as a club will be doing. I’m pretty sure of that.”
