Aspiring Olympic swimmer receives treatment from the Bournemouth AECC

January 17, 2019 by Sub Editor Leave a Comment

Local girl, Kyla van der Merwe, from Bournemouth Collegiate School, a 15-year old, pursuing Olympic GB swimmer, was referred to the AECC University College’s Chiropractic Clinic in October 2018.

After struggling with shoulder pain, which affected her training and competing, she was grateful for the treatment she received from the clinic.

The intense training routine professional athletes go through can take a toll on their health.

On average female swimmers that go through rigorous training programmes gather an average of 16,500 strokes which places an extensive load on their shoulders.

She has been working with a chiropractic intern, Eleanor Pennycook, at the on-site clinic of the AECC.

The initial care she received was focused on reducing pain and inflammation, followed by restoration of full and pain-free range of motion of her shoulders.

Kayla has continued to receive treatment from the AECC which now focuses on preventing shoulder pain which could possibly limit her from performing competitively.

Kayla has ended 2018 with three national age group titles, she has broken a British junior national record that had been unsurpassed for 15 years. She has also moved up to 5th place in the Senior National Final.

All of these achievements have led her to be selected to represent England in the FFN Golden Tour in Nice, between 8 and 10th February, later this year.
