Canford School footpath diversion approved pending investigation following planning committee chaos

January 17, 2019 by subeditor1 Leave a Comment

A planning application to divert a public footpath at Canford School has been approved pending an appeal period.

The Borough of Poole planning committee met at 1 PM Today to debate the proposal by Canford School to divert the public footpath that extends from Magna Road and move it away from the centre of the school’s campus.

The reasons put forward by the school for moving the path were reducing the potential for trespass, vandalism and theft, stopping dog walkers letting their dogs off the lead in areas that the children play and finally safety concerns due to the footpath crossing over the fairway of their golf course.

Councillor M Pope opposed the proposal and suggested that nearly 40 objectors to the plan had not been notified of the meeting, and that therefore the meeting should be postponed.

Councillor Burden then proposed a motion to suspend the debate on the proposal until objectors could be informed.

After a brief discussion, it was decided that the committee would make a decision but the issuing of the diversion order would be delegated to the Head of Growth and Infrastructure for approval once the council had ensured it had followed procedure regarding objectors to the plan.

This decision means no work can be done on diverting the path until the council have ensured that they have followed the correct procedures.

Andrew Bruce Director of Estates a Canford School said he was “very delighted” with the verdict and claims the proposal is a “win win win for everyone as far as we can see.”

“If all goes well we will start construction this summer and aim to open it this year.”
