People of Bournemouth share their views on driving age limit

January 18, 2019 by Sub Editor Leave a Comment

The people of Bournemouth have mixed views on whether there should be an upper-age limit for driving.

Buzz News went to the Town Centre following the Duke of Edinburgh’s accident on Thursday evening, which he escaped from unharmed.

You can see what people think below.

Currently, there is no maximum age of driving, but drivers must renew their licence at the age of 70 and every three years after that.

The re-application relies only on the self-judgement of the individual, but the RAC’s road-safety spokesperson says that this is enough.

“There is no evidence that suggests that older drivers present any greater risk on our roads than other drivers, and many of us would appreciate the independence it gives older people.” said Pete Williams.

“I think any decision has to be evidence-based and the evidence simply isn’t there to suggest a different approach to older drivers.”

Over four million people aged 70 and over hold a licence, 191 of which are aged 100 or above.

However, statistics from 2013 show that elderly drivers are less likely to be involved in an accident, compared to younger drivers.
