Volunteer group Dorset For Europe campaign on Bournemouth high street ahead of Brexit deadline

June 20, 2019 by Connor Stringer Leave a Comment

A local volunteer group has called on Bournemouth shoppers to “write to their MPs” ahead of the Brexit deadline this March.

Volunteer group Dorset for Europe has held a public demonstration to encouraged members of the public to do something about the Brexit deadline.

The organisation, which is funded by its members, carry out street stalls every week in Bournemouth and Poole.

Campaign member Jules Carey said that that purpose of the demonstrations was to “educate” members of the public about the “consequences” of leaving the European Union.

She said: “We are here to support the people’s vote and educate members of the public about what leaving the EU means”.

“They’ve [the goverment] had two and a half years to sort it out and it seems to be an argument within the conservative country rather than getting a good deal for our country.

“People have to understand the decision has consequences”.

Britain voted to leave the EU following a referendum which was held in June 2016 but it was a year later when Prime Minister Theresa May officially invoked Article 50 which signified Britain’s official withdrawal.

Brexit deadline day is set for 29 March 2019 but parliament will face a meaningful vote next week to finalise a Brexit deal.
