Wimborne Town’s first season in the Evo Stik Premier South has been a successful one. They currently sit 10thin the league on 44 points which is more than they could have wished for after just being promoted this season.
The Magpies as they are nicknamed for the white and black stripes reside at their ground which is called The Cuthbury a proper non-league ground with only a small seating area with the rest of the ground standing. Sitting in the corner of the ground is a lovely little bar and the club itself runs off the amazing volunteers that turn up week in, week out to make sure that the club is competitive in the league. It is situated on a lovely country road in Wimborne Minster.
After beating Walton Casuals this weekend 3-0 they extended their unbeaten home record to 12 in the league which is one of the best in the division. Some fans are even wondering if they can make a push for the play off places being only six points off the pace, but boss Matty Holmes will be more than happy with the progress of the team and he’s already putting together the foundations for next season.
It seems to be a league of Dorset based sides with Wimborne being joined in the league by the likes of Dorchester, Weymouth and their close neighbours Poole Town. Poole were relegated from the National League South last season so it will delight Wimborne fans that they are competitively competing with them and even beating them at The Cuthbury 5-2 earlier in the season. Attendances have also been up this season with a total of 342 fans being at the ground on Saturday for the visit of the Stags and they were treated to real classy performance from the Magpies.
It didn’t take long for them to get into gear and inside 12 minutes they had the lead, some good play down the right-hand side, the ball was then fizzed across and finished off by top scorer Toby Holmes who can’t stop scoring at home. In the next minute the hosts were awarded a penalty Holmes was brought down by Casuals defender Max Hustwick, but they spot kick from Penny was saved by Walton keeper Denzel Gerrar who had a great game.
However, Penny later made up for his error a low cross from Toby Holmes was poked home by him to double Wimborne’s lead and make it a lot more comfortable. And then on 60 minutes they finished the game off Burbidge’s through ball was latched onto by Holmes who went for the chip, Gerrar got a hand to it but Holmes ran around him and tapped it into an empty net his 13thgoal in 7 games, 3-0 Wimborne and from there they saw home the game comfortably.
The result continues Wimborne’s great run and they now travel to Hartley Witney Tuesday night with real momentum and potentially one eye on the play offs when most were just hoping for survival.

Assistant manager Shane Traynor said: “They started better than us, but we settled and caught them on a counter attack and nice play led to us having the lead. Half time its 2-0 the game is not over and we have to stay switched on as they will try to come back. Once we went 3-0 up I feel the game was killed and we saw the game out very well.”
