Winton Library’s World Book Day celebrations start next week

June 20, 2019 by Eden Macaulay Leave a Comment

Children across Winton are encouraged to dress up and take part in the national event.

The library will hold a number of activities for pre-school children in the area to inspire them to read.

World book day is a charity that aims to give every child and young person a book of their own.

It is also a celebration of literature, authors and illustrators and happens in over 100 countries across the world.

This year is the 22nd year that world book day has been celebrated and it will be taking place on Thursday 7th March.

Winton Library is among many libraries in Bournemouth taking part in World Book Day and has been for previous years.

With the library already holding sessions for young children, they come well prepared for the national event.

Rosie Guest, a member of the library staff, said:

“We have a ‘Toddler Time’ every Thursday anyway, and this time we are holding a World Book Day Toddler Time where we are encouraging the little ones to dress up.”

Last year, Winton Library had an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme where the children were seen dressing up as the characters, and this year follows a similar approach.

Miss Guest said: “Our theme this year is ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ so we are reading two stories to the children and after that we will do a craft activity with them. At the end they will all get a World Book Day voucher.”

The vouchers are given out to schools and can be taken to any book shop where the children can then exchange them for any of the World Book Day books available in store.

Winton library aren’t ending the celebrations there, Miss Guest said:

“We make quite a thing of it during World Book Day, we do it for a whole week.”

She added: “We are also doing a treasure hunt that has all the World Book Day book covers hidden which the children have to find, and they will receive a prize at the end.”

The library hopes to see many pre-school children coming in through-out the week, and hopes to make the young children in the local area borrow more books and discover reading in a fun way.
