England crowned World Champions after Super Over perplexity

July 14, 2019 by Harvey Camp Leave a Comment

Ben Stokes tallied an outstanding 84 runs as England overcame New Zealand at Lords to win the Cricket World Cup in a mesmerizing final day thriller.

Stokes’ brilliant innings totaling 84 not out saw England climb back from an 86-4 deficit and tie New Zealand’s 241 runs; despite the revival looking highly unlikely with England requiring 15 runs from the final four balls.

Jos Buttler and Stokes respectively racked up 15 runs from Trent Boult’s Super Over, hitting a boundary each to pile the pressure on the Kiwi’s come the rotation. New Zealand batsman Jimmy Neesham looked momentarily destined to clinch the title for the Kiwi’s after hitting Jofra Archer for six on the bowler’s second delivery, however the visitors could only tally one of the two runs they needed. This matched England’s total but came down to amount of boundaries hit, whereby the host nation came out on top.

Eoin Morgan’s side therefore completed their turn around, marking a phenomenal occasion and putting last time’s World Cup woes behind them in one of the most sensational games of Cricket to ever be played at Lords.
